CookerY classes in Athboy
On Monday, October 3rd our very enthusiastic group of young cooks started a new 6 week run of cookery. We had 9 participants, all apron clad and fully drilled in how to prepare and cook a dish, learning about both the proteins and carbohydrates in the dish. Tina as always was assisted by Brenda and some of our older members also supported the younger ‘cooks’.
This is our 4th session of classes at the CCC since our very first class on 19th October, 2015.
Through cookery our members are developing verbal skills, planning a meal and kitchen hygiene to mention just a few new skills. Its a fun class. The kitchen is available to all our members if any parent would like to pull together a few young people with a tutor at any time.

CÚL CAMP 2016
Although it is not organised directly by Special Hands we have to give a very special mention to the GAA Cùl Camp that is provided every year, free of charge, by Meath GAA. It is a fantastic camp and this year over 30 of our members took part. The camp is facilitated by some parents of our members in conjunction with the Meath County Board.
This years camp was in the Dunganny centre of excelllence, an amazing facility on the Trim/Navan road.
For a week, our members where treated like Gaelic Royalty and given the opportunity to attend a wonderful Cul Camp. It is always one of the highlights of the summer and we are already looking forward to next years Cul Camp

SUMMER 2016
What a year it has been so far for 2016.
Our summer Calander was packed full of activities.
With the help of our wonderful Tina & the kitchens in The Athboy Community Centre, we held an incredibly successful week long cookery course for 8 of our junior members as well as a weekly cookery course for our senior members. The junior members worked with the 'Look and Cook' cookbook which has proved very successful.
An OT camp was facilitated by Della Murtagh and our wonderful volunteers. This camp was subsided by Special Hands and approximately 15 members attended. The children did everything from Art to bread making to adventure trails. It was a great success as it is every year.
Special Hands also organised a day out for all our members, young and young at heart! A fabulous day was had by one and all at Rathbeggan lakes, over 30 members attended on the day and enjoyed the fantastic facility's of The Lakes.
Our senior members enjoyed a brilliant Drama Work Shop with Mary Farrell. As always our senior members talent shone through. Our Seniors also enjoyed an UpCycling workshop, they made a wonderful job of UpCycling the benches in our rooms in Athboy.
As always swimming continued throughout July, taking a break for the month of August. We had two sessions per week or Leaner Swimmers and Swimmers. Both sessions, as always, where booked to capacity. Swimming is such a popular class and we endeavour to offer up spaces as & when they become available.
We had two of our learner swim members move up to the swimmers classes at the end of July. Both have been swimming with Special Hands one to one lessons for years but their dedication has paid off and we look forward to welcoming them to the swimmers class in September to watch their swim abilities develop and progress.
Out bingo classes where a massive success with our senior members & they continue on a weekly basis.
Finally a disco !! As if all that wasn't enough we finished off our summer in style with a seniors disco in August! A great night & summer was had by all!
Special Hands would like to say a heart felt thank you to everyone who gave of their time freely to ensure our members always have the support they need to be able to take part in all our activities from Swimming to Cookery and everything in between.

FUNKY FIT
Another new and hugely successful class was our trial Funky Fit class, the brain child of one of our members parents, Cara Morgan. Cara brought together a fun Pilates class, where are kids exercised, stretched and worked their core without even knowing it as it was so much fun, then they went on after to try our so many new foods. Shakes, healthy crackers, hummus, beetroot, raisins, cucumber, carrots and so much more. Some food was more successful than others but one amazing thing is everyone tried something new. Caroline Dixon from the Well Being center in Kells has offered to hold a class for parents on nutrition. If you are interested in attending please get in touch.
OUR NEW ALLOTMENTS
Of all the wonderful things we do within the charity this is by far one of our most adventurous. Ladies and Gentlemen we have an allotment! It is very early days and work will hopefully commence really soon. For anyone interested in getting involved, picking up a shovel or sowing some seeds please get in touch. We will be sending out more details as to how we will run the allotments as soon as we have turned some soil. Onward and upwards folks - veggies for all
ST. PATRICK' PARADE ATHBOY
We were asked to take part in the recent St Patrick' day parade in Athboy and it was with great delight we accepted. The theme of the parade was Back to the Future and some of our members parents set about building a float. Our wonderful chairperson managed to source a very impressive, real, Delorian car to take park in the parade and it is with great pride we can announce that we won an award for the most artistic entry! Thank you to everyone who pinned, painted, sprayed and cellotaped.. lots of cellotape! More importantly thank you to everyone who came along and represented our fantastic charity with such pride. Well done everyone.
MUSIC CLASSES
'TRIONA AND THE OTHER DIRECTIONS'
Music class has been running for several months now and we are beyond thrilled every week to see the class grow and grow. We have people coming from far and wide every Saturday to join in both the senior and junior groups and it is our gem of a music teacher Triona Grendon who keeps our members'' excited about music and the classes. Our senior members have become so excited about music through the classes that it is an honor to announce that Special Hands Activity Group now has its own official band! Triona and the Other Directions !! Who would of taught we would ever have our own band, we are so proud of them all. They have been practicing like crazy and they are making their public debut at our Charity Event, Pamper Me for Charity which takes place on April 18th in the Headfort Arms Hotel Kells. Please come along and support our members on their very brave performance.

VERY IMPORTANT SWIMMING INFORMATION
Due to the unprecedented need for Learners swimming lessons it has been decided that the Learners will now be spilt into two blocks of lessons. The first lessons begin on the 13th of September 2014 and last the 7 weeks up until Halloween and the second block of lessons will last from November to Christmas.
As there is such a high volume of children wishing to avail of the one to one Learner lessons we have had to limit it to only one block per child. Therefore, if your child attends the block from September to Halloween they can not attend the next block from November to Christmas and vise versa.
If your child attends the 2.30 learners lesson on a Saturday can you please contact Theresa Olohan directly or send us an email here to confirm your childs place in either the September to Halloween session or the November to Christmas sesson.
The Swimmers classes at 3.30 remain the same.
We are currently unable to take any new children for lessons, however there is a waiting list for spaces so please send in your child's name and details and once a place becomes available you will be contacted.

OLD ROAD EQUESTRIAN OPEN DAY
SUNDAY 24TH AUGUST 2014
We recently took a trip to meet with Emma and Olivia from Old Road Equestrian in Navan and we were very impressed. Its is a newly, purpose built, facility with an all weather arena, a beautiful sensory trail and the most gentle of horses. Therapeutic riding helps adults and children with physical and cognitive disabilities. It promotes self esteem and creates a sense of purpose for those with emotional, behavioural and educational difficulties.
They have very kindly offered a special open day on Sunday 24th August 2014 to the members of Special Hands Activity Group. This is a wonderful opportunity to meet with Emma, Olivia and the team and to explore the centre and everything that they have to offer. If you are interested in attending the open day please contact Emma on 0861594997.

O.T. SUMMER CAMP
Our Summer camp program this year has been a resounding success. The Occupational Therapy camp was thoroughly enjoyed by all the children who attended with singing, dancing, swimming, painting and too many activities to list. There was even a trip to the hotel for a hot chocolate treat for the boys and girls who attended. The final day included siblings with everyone taking a trip to Causey Farm. The children returned covered in mud and smiling from ear to ear having each baked an extremely tasty loaf of brown bread to bring home with them. A very special 'Thank You' to Della Murtagh and the Murtagh Family at Causey Farm and especially to all the helpers who made the week so enjoyable. We wouldn't be able to do it without you.
HIP HOP DANCE
Another success for our summer camp program was the introduction of Hip Hop dance classes. Due to the volume of requests and the dancing being such a success, the classes will continue through to September. Take a look at some of our members having a great time in the Athboy class Here
THE JOURNEY'S ON US PARTY
EMMA BRADYFollowing on from our wonderful member Emma Brady winning the 'Journey's on us' prize with Iarnrod Eireann, she very generously hosted a party for her fellow members and friends in the Ardboyne Hotel in Navan. It was a fantastic night full of singing and dancing and great craic was had by one and all. Thank you again Emma.

ART & CRAFTS 2013/2014
Our Art and Crafts classes finished last Saturday for the summer break. We had an amazing year with our members talents being show cased at the annual Special Hands Easter Fair. With the support of our magnificent teachers our members got to experiment with creating some stunning pieces of pottery, from bowls to pendants to plaques, all of which were finished and glazed to perfection.
Our members made some spectacular pieces using Batik and created the spookiest of Halloween art. We were very lucky to meet with Tom Moore, the director of the animation 'The Secret of Kells' who popped into one of our Art classes to see some of our work.
Our Christmas wreaths and Yule Log's were a resounding success and many beautiful 'Family heirlooms' were created that day. As always our papier mache class was a sell out with everything from colourful pigs to Easter Eggs being created.
Special Hands Activity Group would like to say a very heartfelt THANK YOU to our various Art and craft teachers over the 2013/2014 term. We are looking forward to seeing everyone back after the break, ready for another creative year.
